Plateosaur Fossil – A 230-Million-Year-Old Trace

In 2000, Mr. Bui Van Bien, a local resident, stumbled upon an unusual rock formation during a forest trek—its surface bore ridges that resembled vertebrae. Intrigued, he reported the finding to Mr. Le Trong Dat, a researcher at Cuc Phuong National Park.

What followed was nothing short of a scientific miracle. Guided by a rough sketch and the curiosity of "the chosen one," scientists launched an investigation. Their efforts led to the first-ever discovery in Southeast Asia of a fossilized reptile belonging to the Plateosauridae group from the Middle Triassic period—approximately 200 to 250 million years ago. This groundbreaking find dramatically reshaped prior scientific understanding of the group.

Today, you can stand face-to-face with a replica of this ancient fossil in Cuc Phuong National Park. Venture deep into the maze-like jungle trails to witness this natural "masterpiece" millions of years in the making. As you stand before this prehistoric relic, you'll feel a profound connection to Earth's primal past—an overwhelming sense of wonder, curiosity, and pride knowing you're in the presence of a priceless ancient treasure.
